Natural dyeing techniques by Buddhist monks

Have you ever wondered why the costumes worn by Buddhist monks were color yellow or orange? How to choose and tint of the materials you have? Have you ever wanted to dye fabric similar to the Buddhist ideal?

The man, who become a Buddha, a son of the Shakya clan and grew to adulthood in a right and sheltered life in the sixth century BC in India. First encounters sickness, old age and death breaks his complacency and asked the question of the privileged and the alleged experiences of his life. He resigned his home and family to dedicate to respond to questions of suffering and, as was the custom, he changed his fine clothes away from a beggar.

Legend dictates the original suit used by the Buddha was realized from the remains of many of cloth sewn together. Sewn into the pattern of Magadha rice fields in northern India. This has changed over the years Buddhist disciples today should dress coat, always look neat and well covered. According to the rules established in the book Buddhist monk's discipline, his clothes should be naturally dyed and made. There should be white or bright colors, but no specific color choice. Principles of Buddhist religious authorities have interpreted the instructions the gown, when done, must be tinged with yellow to red. All Buddhist sects everyone has a different gown because the various indigenous plants used for dyeing. For example, the opaque yellow often used in the streets of Bangkok and in other parts of Thailand, are used by Buddhist monks in Thailand, is a tone that managed the heartwood of the native Jack-fruit trees.

To achieve any Buddhist inspired natural color, first to prepare the dress place in a bowl with cold or warm water with a solution made from a mixture of cow manure, red earth, or from selected plants, ie parts: roots, bark, wood, flowers.

- To achieve a dull yellow, the jack tree, the wood is cut into slices and boiled in water until the solution is dark brown. The wet garment is placed in the second solution, and left there until the desired yellow pigment "dirty" is achieved.

- To achieve a warm orange, the plant is used Sindurey of Nepal, or seeds of annatto and annatto.

- Shades of red are obtained with raspberry plants wood yellow or Rambai and annatto seeds.

It is important to note, these sources can be difficult plant to find in our Western world. Many of the plants in North America can use are like weeds. These weeds can be found anywhere along roads, fields, forests and jungles. The best thing is to have a central reference guide to find the right plant for the color of dye needed.
