I used to consider myself solely Asian simply because of the Geographical location of the Philippines and i think many Filipinos share the same sentiment. I got a chance to meet the Mexican ambassador to the Phil a few years back and he pointed out the many similarities of Filipinos to Latinos.

After hearing what he said, I'm really puzzled why those things he mentioned were not brought up in school. There are so many things that link Filipinos and Mexicans and the degree of this relationship is only rivaled by the Filipino-Chinese connection. Not many Filipinos may feel latino, but without knowing it, we share so many beliefs, ideologies, cultural aspects and history. They even sell green mangoes and "cincamas" in the streed like we do...they have something similar to the barong... religious figures are the same... they even call carpenters as "kawayanan" or something like that.

Another thing rarely mentioned is that a lot of Mexicans actually have Filipino blood since a lot of workers before were brought from the Philippines.

I can say now i feel more Latino than Asian and I'm sure that if filipino-mexican ties were pointed out, i think more filipinos would feel the same way. We are almost one people, we just dont know it. Until then however, I think most filipinos would think of them as purely asian.
