EZ Guide to Spotting a Fake Torah Yad (Pointer) or Besamim (Spice) Holder

eBay is full of counterfeit Judaica for sale.

Let me show you an easy way to spot most of the fake Torah yads and besamim holders.

Look at the besamim holder above. It is formed by welding together five parts: the eagle on top, the crudely-made filigree ball, the larger silver ball, the little boy, and the filigree base. There are some additional decorations: the Star of David welded on top of the larger silver ball and various blue and red stones.

Genuine antique silver IS NOT made by welding together little parts.

The fake items on eBay use similar parts again and again.

See examples of these parts below. If your item contains any of these parts, IT IS A FAKE.

Below is an example of the "sad rabbi." Torah yads and besamim holders are meant to celebrate happy occassions. Why would any Jew buy an item with a sad rabbi?

Similarly, here are some grotesque forms. One is reading a book (a siddur, perhaps?). The other looks like he just survived a pogrom. Again, why would any Jew buy this item?

Oh, wait. Here is some joy. The happy klezmer musicians.

Below are some other fake parts--an eagle on a filigree ball, some little boys, a gem, a lion, a menorah, a Star of David, and the letter shin. Just mix and match them and you can have your very own piece of fake Judaica.

What Should I Do About This?

I was invited to a housewarming party. I understand that when you get a new home you want to show it off, but in the invitation it says
"(person's name for whom party is for) has the basics. She could use some colorful homey touches.

Also bring recipes for...."

Also the thing is the party is not even at the place the person moved to. It is at someone Else's house. Another reason that i don't want to go is because the party this is for is a person with which i am having a hard time to be with. She is older than me, and she has done things to me that are immature and childish. I wish she wold stop, but that is for a different time. Is this party kind self-centered for the person who it is for? Should I even go? Isn't getting things for a home kinda like a thing you do when your getting married, like a bridal shower or something? So some advice would be really helpful, and if you need more info let me know.

If it were me I would find a reason not to go to the party. If you and the person for whom the party is thrown find that you are getting along in the future, then make sure you stop by her new home, tell her how nice it is, and if you would like you can take a gift.

In all the times I have moved, and all the housewarming parties I have thrown I have never asked for or expected gifts. I just want to show off my new place! (that's not to say I have never gotten gifts, but they were always from close friends who saw something I was missing and brought it later.)

This does seem like an attempt to sucker gifts or guilt from friends. I'd be wary.
