List Of Extinct Animals

How to protect our endangered animals

Around the world, habitats are being destroyed at record rates, leaving many species of animals at risk of extinction. Scientists estimate that 40% of all species on Earth face extinction in the not too distant future. It is possible that some of these species are in your own gardens. So we have to think about animal protection on a local level as well as a world level.

So how can you help protect our endangered animals?

1. Find out which animals are on the endangered species list and see if any can be found near you. Doing this can help you find out what habitats, food, etc these animals prefer.

2. If you have some time to spare, head down to a local nature reserve and volunteer your time. Nature reserves do great work in helping to preserve habitats and give animals and plants an area in which they can flourish.

3. Switch to environmentally friendly alternatives. Many products we use for cleaning can pollute waterways so by switching to environmentally friendly products we can help our wildlife. Furthermore, avoid any products, which have been made from threatened or endangered animals. If there is no demand for these products then production will cease. Next time you go shopping try to find organic products that are made from sustainable sources. For example chocolate and coffee.

4. In your own garden or local area you can help animals by creating habitats. Helping butterflies for example is quite easy. Allow parts of your garden to grow wild and this will encourage them so you not only get to help them but you can enjoy them in your garden too!

5. If you can't dedicate the time to volunteering, or building habitats yourself then why not help other organisations. You can adopt an animal and help provide funding for their work. Adoption makes a great gift and it is a great way you can actually help change the world for the better!

Description

Many books have been written about animals, and very good books too, giving a great deal of information. Most of them are called works of Natural History; and they usually give some description of the birds and beasts, fishes and insects, that are known to man. I am not going to write such a book as that; but to say a little about different kinds of creatures that we are all in the habit of seeing, and to tell you a few things of some which have belonged to me, or have come under my own observation; so that, at least, I can promise to write nothing but what I know to be true. I have not learned their characters and habits from books, but by watching them ever since I was a very young child; and many a happy hour I have spent in that delightful employment.

Description

Photographer Susan Middleton and David Liittschwager are in a race against the clock to capture powerful portraits of America's most threatened creatures. Join them on their unforgettable adventure that takes them from the California Sierra to the deep South, from the woods of North Carolina to the Pacific's shores. Along the way, they encounter a camera-shy Black-Footed ferret, capture the beauty of the golden trout, help release a pair of red wolves back to the wild, and watch from a front-row seat as a bald eagle chick is returned its cliffside nest. Their every picture tells a story...and makes a plea: DON'T SAY GOOD-BYE to America's natural treasures.

The folks at National Geographic, with the help of narrator James Woods, take us on a zigzag road trip across the U.S. in this 1997 documentary. We follow photographers Susan Middleton and David Liitschwager, who gave up their earlier pursuits (museum and fashion photography, respectively) to capture on film the rarest fauna and flora of the North American continent. A selection of these pictures was published in their book, Witness: Endangered Species of North America. This hour-long film takes us from a black-footed ferret breeding farm in Wyoming to Florida manatee pools to the Presidio in San Francisco where we see a plant that is so rare, only one exists and its exact location is a government secret. The portraiture is vibrant and truly stunning and the film is interspersed with interview clips of scientific luminaries such as Harvard's Edward O. Wilson. Despite a subject matter that is necessarily depressing, America's Endangered Species: Don't Say Good-Bye outlines a few recovery success stories and highlights the efforts of individuals throughout the U.S. who are determined to make sure that these species are around for future generations of National Geographic fans. --Douglas Dalrymple

Excerpt: The Falkland Islands Wolf (Dusicyon australis), also known as the Warrah and occasionally as the Falkland Islands Dog, Falkland Islands Fox or Antarctic Wolf, was the only native land mammal of the Falkland Islands. This endemic canid became extinct in 1876 (on West Falkland island), the first known canid to have gone extinct in historical times. It was the only modern species in the genus Dusicyon. Original research supposed that the most closely related genus is Lycalopex, including the Culpeo and his domestic forms (perro fueguino, perro yagán), which itself has been introduced to the Falkland Islands in modern times. But 2009 research conducted by a scientific team directed by Graham J. Slater, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles, confirmed that the Falkland Island wolf's closest living relative is actually the Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) - an unusually long-legged, fox-like South American canid, which it separated from about 6.7 million years ago. It was known from both West and East Falkland, but it is unknown if the varieties were much differentiated. The fur of the Falkland Islands Wolf had a tawny colour. The tip of the tail was white. The diet is unknown. Due to the absence of native rodents on the Falklands, its diet probably consisted of ground-nesting birds such as geese and penguins, grubs and insects, as well as seashore scavenging. It was sometimes said to have dwelt in burrows. Illustration of Dusicyon culpaeus from Zoolo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=396345

Some authorities still categorize this group as a family Drepanididae, but in recent years most authorities consider them a subfamily, Drepanidinae, of Fringillidae, the finch family. The entire group is also called "Drepanidini" in treatments where buntings and American sparrows (Emberizidae) are included in the finch family; this term is preferred for just one sub-group of the birds today. The group is divided into three tribes, but only very provisionally so. Several taxa appear to be too basal to really place into one of these, and others are best considered incertae sedis. Some unusual forms never seen alive by scientists, such as Xestospiza or Vangulifer, cannot easily be placed into any group. Members of Psittirostrini, known as "Hawaiian finches," are granivorous with thick finch-like bills, and songs like those of cardueline finches. The group once covered the islands. Description

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Fauna of Europe is all the animals living in Europe and its surrounding seas and islands. Since there is no natural biogeographic boundary in the east and south between Europe and Asia, the term "fauna of Europe" is somewhat elusive. Europe is the western part of the Palearctic ecozone which in turn is part of the Holarctic. Lying within the temperate region, north of the equator the wildlife is not as rich as in warmer regions, but nevertheless diverse due to the variety of habitats and the faunal richness of the Eurasia as a whole.
