Container Gardening With Herbs for Potpourri
A container garden with herbs and flowers for potpourri is a simple way to obtain
children involved in gardening. Children love to help and this is a good way to introduce time creating your own container garden with vegetables and flowers.
Why do we want to grow something that smells good? We like fragrance and think everything should be clean smells good. In the days before sanitation was used and understood, fresh air is considered hazardous. Potpourri was created from wanting a fresh, clean scent to replace unwanted odors and in castles and houses field. It was soon discovered that the clean, fresh scent of flowers, herbs and spices have the ability to mask odors.
Here is a short history the use and creation of potpourri. This is French meaning "to rot" because a wet method was used to make potpourri but now days using the dry method.
During the time of castles and cottages little housewife or cleaning they did their duty to make potpourri and bags fragrant. After a room has been cleaned up a potpourri jar was placed and then stirred for the fragrance to fill the room. Bags of all sizes were filled with rose petals and lavender and placed in closets and linen presses. These were also placed on the backs of the chairs. herbs were thrown to the floor in churches and hospitals to mask room odors.
People were proud of their ability to produce blends of herbs and flowers
fragrances wonderful. Foreign countries grew the best herbs and were valued and expensive. It has never been easier for the home or apartment dweller to create a wonderful container garden for enjoyment. Select the herbs and flowers for perfume you want on your potpourri. A good combination of roses, thyme and lavender can producing a wonderful potpourri.
Choose containers based on the size of plants and herbs. Any container with good drainage holes work. Cover drainage holes with used dryer sheets and fill with a mixture of 50% compost and potting soil.
The packaging of flowers and herbs should be placed together as Sun needs irrigation and water when soil begins to feel dry. A good way to organize the containers is about a living room with a minimum of six hours of sunlight.
Collect flowers and herbs in the first bloom during the day when there is no moisture
on leaves or petals. Tie in bunches by their stems and hang to dry. Within weeks, the test for dryness by crumbling leaves and petals between your fingers. The petals and leaves crumble easily and feels dry.
A base of dried rose petals are added volume to the prescription of a potpourri mixture. This can range from a few to a few cupfuls of dried petals. Potpourri can be done with any combination of herbs, spices and flowers. There is no limit on the combinations that can be created.
To make a simple lavender potpourri:
1. 16 oz dried lavender flowers.
2. 2 oz sweet woodruff.
3. 1-1/2 oz each of moss and thyme.
4. 8 oz orange peel cut into strips.
5. 4 oz benzoin.
6. Several handfuls of flowers such as cornflowers or violet.
7. 1 / 4 ounce of cloves and anise combined.
8. Mix and let the season
Pour into bags and bottles and enjoy!
