Essential Cooking Spices

What are the essential ingredients for a cooking kitchen should have?

I'm not a great cook. Low interest in Home Ec and a tendency to eat out have left me with bare kitchen cupboards (except salt, pepper, coffee, tea.) But to save money you want to cook at home now. What does it take to cook at home? I saw an article once in the list of spices, oil olive oil, etc, but I did not write it down. Wow! Now I'm going to have to find a grocery store! hehe What about spices and cooking oil and sugar and other extras to have on hand when you buy the main ingredients?

This is what I like to have in my house: Spices: Cumin Salt Pepper Chili powder Ciinamon dry parsley dry onion garlic chives Granultaed chicken powder and Italian dressing Bullion cubes Vanilla dill Paprika Cabinets: Peanut Butter Cake Mixes Pasta such as: orzo macaroni spaghetti linguini noodles egg noodles, jasmine rice and brown lasgana dry pinto beans, black, kidney, etc. .. Cornmeal Cookies garbonzo Bread Flour Sugar Brown Sugar Sugar powdered Few Humbug type of food aid for a quick dash of seasoned salt Fridge: Milk Eggs Cheese Butter Block cheese and horse ranch in May radsih pickles Ketchup BBQ (I make my own and causes death) dressings for salads Salsa Sour cream sauce Apple Jelly Baking soda baking powder Orange Carrots Celery little canned tomatoes, canned beans for a quick lunch fix Pantry items:-Idaho or baking, red and sweet potatoes Garlic potatoes Veggie Oil Olive Oil Shortening Honey Oat (no microwave packages) Freezer: Hambuerger (purchase of 5-10 pounds and divide and freeze in portions of 1 pd) Chicken Breasts Pork Chops with Roast Beef steaks few bags of frozen vegetables, such as ... corn, mixed vegetables, peas and broccoli. **** I also get a lot my basic spices dollar store or Wal-Greens, and sometimes k-mart where I can find for a dollar.

Basic cooking essentials?

I am a new cook as well as pots and pans, what are the most commonly used essential elements commonly used in recipes. (Condiments spices, vegetables, etc) I have to go shopping so please help me out!

you can buy a basic spice rack 20 jar shop, get a vacuum from a thrift store as well (other spices to retrieve later.) grater, fins good knife, etc, I recommend a vacumn sealer (Money saved buying the other things you need) (cutting board, not one of those glass - which are terrible - get a big plastic one), kitchen gloves, a whisk rod, roll, meat tenderizer () hammer. hand + oven thermometer Justice, clay pot, at least 6 qt. , Steam, toast, ceramic or glass baking dishes, colander, mixing good if you can afford one (remember to do things that save money because it gets pretty expensive. i personally like to go store restaurant equipment used (you can find one on the line), its material lasts much longer than Wal-Mart junk. there are a lot more things I could make a list, but I'm sure this is a lot of money already.

Know--how in a nutshell. The step--by--step series that brings expert advice at an affordable price. Breaks down using culinary spices into 101 easy--to--grasp tips. Gives quick answers to all questions. Each point can be absorbed in an instant.

This demure little book packs a world of spice know-how into it's 69 pages--with not a real life Spice Girl in sight! Profiling an aromatic array of spices: paprika, cinnamon, cumin, anise, and some which the tongue has a hard time even negotiating such as asafetida and fenugreek--Cooking with Spices is a flavorsome treat. Handy hints are given for the selection, drying, and storing of spices, as well as pointers for freezing and grinding. Full color photographs profile the varieties and conditions of a spice--ginger has four types: preserved, dried, fresh, and ground. This spice is recommended for curry powder, meat and fish dishes, and of course cookies! The book even manages to squeeze in 42 recipes that will heat up the kitchen! From the Far East we have Thai Shrimp Soup with Lemongrass, a succulent dish with a zesty balance of lemongrass, chilies, scallion, cilantro, and the shrimp. From the Middle East comes a terrific recipe for faithful Falafel--plan in advance for this one, as chickpeas must be soaked for 36 hours. It's worth the effort though; this is a thoroughly delicious dish, perfect for dipping at parties! Flavorings deserve their own cookbook--and Cooking with Spices is a great place to go for the basics. --Naomi Gesinger

Fresh herbs offer a healthy and delicious way to spice up any meal, but growing and cooking with these delectable plants are endeavors fraught with uncertainty. What herbs will grow year-round on my kitchen windowsill? What foods complement rosemary? Which part of a lemongrass plant has the best flavor? Can I really eat the geraniums growing in my flower bed? This indispensable guide from The Herb Society of America takes the guesswork out of using herbs in the garden and in the kitchen by providing detailed information for cultivating a wide variety of herbs, along with easy-to-follow recipes that will surely impress even the most discerning palate. Ranging from Alliums (onions, chives, and garlic) to Zingiber (ginger), the volume's first section provides horticultural information for each of the sixty-three herbs found in the National Herb Garden's Culinary Garden, including common and botanical names, family, place of origin, hardiness, and general light and soil requirements. Botanical sketches accompany many of the entries. Each entry also includes a short history of the herb, gardening basics, and suggestions for using the herb in your kitchen.
