Cryopreservation techniques bring hopes for women cancer victims and endangered species
Emerging cryopreservation techniques are increasing hope of restoring fertility for women after diseases such as ovarian cancer that lead to destruction of reproductive tissue. The same techniques can also be used to maintain stocks of farm animals, and protect against extinction of endangered animal species by maintaining banks of ovarian tissue or embryos, including emerging that can be used to produce offspring at some point in the future.
So far, these clearly related fields of research concerning preservation of ovarian tissue from animals and humans have been largely separate, but join now to reinforce each other, following a highly successful workshop on cryopreservation of ovarian tissue, organized by the European Science Foundation (ESF). Fields human and animal cryopreservation have much to learn from each other and progress in both is likely to be accelerated as a result of growing collaboration, as ESF workshop coordinator Yding Claus Andersen.
Both sides can learn from each other, "said Andersen." Experiments that can not be performed in women can be done in animal species, "he said, noting that much of the progress in humans has come as a result of animal experiments. But in humans in more successful transplants of ovarian tissue after thawing have been carried out and where greatest experience in the field has earned. Therefore the ESF conference considered how it could be applied to conservation of endangered species. "The vast experience in women with several children born as a result of transplantation of frozen / thawed ovarian tissue can be applied in endangered species to know where the implant and how to obtain pregnancies, "said Andersen. The techniques will also be valuable in agriculture, conservation of the ovaries of farm animals in tissue banks with the potential for subsequent re-creation.
The conference highlighted recent progress in human ovarian cryopreservation, which has led to date 25 women worldwide with transplanted ovarian tissue. Of these 25, five have given birth to babies following the successful transplantation of frozen / thawed tissue ovarian, including two in Belgium, one in Israel and two in Denmark. "It's likely to do much more of this coming in the coming years, including the development of techniques for fertility preservation using different approaches, "said Andersen. Most of these women had lost fertility following treatment various forms of cancer. Currently, more than a thousand women globally have had their tissue cryopreserved in an attempt to preserve fertility. This number is likely to increase in future as the transplantation technology is more mature and widely available.
The approach used most widely to date for the cryopreservation involves slow freezing, whiching individual oocytes (eggs). However, a new approach based on vitrification may achieve and minimizes the damage caused by forming ice crystals to the follicles, the reproductive units containven best results with both methods discussed at the ESF conference. Vitrification involves the conversion of ovarian tissue in a glass-like shape without damaging ice crystals, and can be achieved by very rapid freezing, for example, dowsing in liquid nitrogen. This supercools water in the tissue, achieving a semi-solid form without formation of crystals that destroy cells.arch individual through the unification of human and animal sectors and applying common expertise and tools. "I beli The ESF workshop will help give Europe a healthy base to expand cryopreservation reseeve we had a very good interaction between all participants and the workshop has already established new collaborations and interactions, " Andersen said.

Join them on their unforgettable adventure that takes them from the California Sierra to the deep South, from the woods of North Carolina to the Pacific's shores. Along the way, they encounter a camera-shy Black-Footed ferret, capture the beauty of the golden trout, help release a pair of red wolves back to the wild, and watch from a front-row seat as a bald eagle chick is returned its cliffside nest. Their every picture tells a story...and makes a plea: DON'T SAY GOOD-BYE to America's natural treasures. The folks at National Geographic, with the help of narrator James Woods, take us on a zigzag road trip across the U.S. in this 1997 documentary. We follow photographers Susan Middleton and David Liitschwager, who gave up their earlier pursuits (museum and fashion photography, respectively) to capture on film the rarest fauna and flora of the North American continent. A selection of these pictures was published in their book, Witness: Endangered Species of North America. This hour-long film takes us from a black-footed ferret breeding farm in Wyoming to Florida manatee pools to the Presidio in San Francisco where we see a plant that is so rare, only one exists and its exact location is a government secret. The portraiture is vibrant and truly stunning and the film is interspersed with interview clips of scientific luminaries such as Harvard's Edward O. Wilson. Despite a subject matter that is necessarily depressing, America's Endangered Species: Don't Say Good-Bye outlines a few recovery success stories and highlights the efforts of individuals throughout the U.S. who are determined to make sure that these species are around for future generations of National Geographic fans. --Douglas Dalrymple |
