Dry Rubs

Dry Rubs

Dry Rubs

When making bbq ribs, how far in advance of cooking them do you put on the dry rub?

Can I rub it on the night before?

here's my world famous rib recipe.
pork ribs (babybacks are best but are pricey)
1 pkt of McCormick Mesquite seasoning
1/3 cup brown sugar

combine the seasoning and sugar and apply liberally to the ribs, both sides but more on top.

On a baking sheet with a lip, wrap in foil so that it makes a packet. You will have to crimp together 2 sheets and then lay another sheet down across the "seam".

You can refrigerate overnight if you want, it helps the meat absorb the flavor, but you can also pop them right in the oven.

Bake the securly pouched ribs for 4 hours at 300 degrees. Low, slow cooking is the secret to tender fall off the bone ribs. After 4 hours, remove from the oven, carefully drain off the liquid.

At this point you can either skip the sauce or baste with your favorite bbq sauce and broil them on HIGH until the sauce starts to bubble and turn blackish. This is the sugar in the sauce carmelizing. Just remember there's a fine line between carmelized and burnt. Keep your eye on them once you've got them under the broiler. If you try this and like it, please pass the recipe on, as there are SO MANY PEOPLE making boiled ribs out there. PLEASE PEOPLE...don't boil your ribs!!

Do You Know The Best Products For Dry Skin?

What Exactly is Dry Skin? It's actually a very common skin problem. Plenty of factors can exacerbate this problem, including drying soaps, age, sun exposure and low humidity. Dry skin is sometimes only a temporary problem which is caused by dry weather. Showering too often, especially in water which is too hot, can cause dry skin.

Dry skin can look dehydrated, shrunken or flaky. It is common for the skin to appear rough. Redness, itching, flakiness or deep cracks are common in a dry skin sufferer. Some of the more severe dry skin cases might require the help of a dermatologist but a lot of dry skin troubles can be treated at home, using adequate skin care and modifying the diet.

What Causes Dry Skin?

Almost everybody experiences dry skin at some point in their life and finding out more about this common complaint can help you to take measures to prevent it. These are some common risk factors:

Age - Oil production often decreases as you become older and your skin changes over the course of your life. Skin products suitable when you were in your teens might be unsuitable if you are now in your thirties for example.

Bathing - If your showers or baths are too hot or too long, your skin can be stripped of its protective oils. These protective oils are necessary for keeping your skin moisturized. If you wash your hands too often, they might become red, chapped and sore.

Dehydration - If your skin is dry, it means it lacks water. If you fail to drink enough water, your skin will look and feel dry. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day is essential for optimum health, not just in your skin but your whole body.

Gender - Both genders can suffer from dry skin problems but the menopause makes dry skin worse in women.

Health - Various health issues can affect the ability of the body to care for the skin, which might result in dry skin. Illnesses such as diabetes can mean you are more likely to experience dry skin.

Exposure to Sunlight - The sun can make existing dry skin problems worse or dry out your skin to create problems.

Sometimes, having dry skin can result in other problems which need the help of a medical professional, such as a dermatologist. Eczema is one example of a dry skin condition. An eczema sufferer will have cracked skin, redness and inflammation.

Cellulites is another dry skin condition, where the skin layers are inflamed due to a bacterial infection. It is best to take care of dry skin as soon as you know you have it, rather than allow more serious complications to develop.

How to Prevent Dry Skin:

One way of preventing dry skin is to spend less time in the bath or shower. Bathe or shower once a day and make sure you are in and out within fifteen minutes. This means your body's natural oils are not stripped. Use gentle cleansers on your skin, preferably ones which contain added moisturizers.

You can buy soaps with added moisturizers, such as Dove, Olay and Neutrogena. If you prefer not to use soap, you can get dry skin cleansers, such as Aveeno or Cetaphil. Antibacterial soaps and deodorants are known for causing dry skin. When you wash, be gentle with your skin and blot yourself with a towel rather than rubbing.

How Do Moisturizers Work?

A moisturizer is like a barrier between your skin and the elements. The moisturizer holds water in your skin tissue, making it feel and look better. Washing removes the skin's natural oils and moisturizers replace them. Moisturizers need to be applied after cleansing the skin and throughout the day as you need it. If you apply moisturizers to damp skin, this can reduce dry skin problems too.

Sunscreen and moisturizer combinations are not normally as good together as using a separate cream for each purpose. Use a good moisturizer and also use a good sunscreen.

Selecting the best moisturizer for your dry skin is simpler if you understand how various moisturizers work. You can find cheap moisturizers or very expensive ones. Knowing exactly what is best for your skin is vital.

Aloe is an ingredient commonly found in good moisturizers. It is an emollient which has been extracted from aloe vera plant leaves. This helps to remove dead skin and lock in water, keeping the skin moisturized.

Alpha hydroxy acids help with exfoliation. Antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C and E, help to protect cell membranes and fatty tissues. They repair damage caused by sun rays and air pollutants. Dimethicone is a silicon which lubricates and protects the skin.

Emollients are a mixture of water and oil, meaning they are heavier than other moisturizers. Emollients help to lubricate the skin and replace lipids. Glycerin attracts water to the skin and is a natural by-product of soap production. Humectants attract water and work best in humid places.

Vitamin A (retinoic acid) improves sun damage and helps to keep the pores clean. Rosehip seed oil can decrease imperfections including wrinkles and can repair dry skin.

You might have to try a few different products on your skin until you find one you like the look, feel and smell of, and one that suits your particular skin type. Some people do not like greasy creams or runny lotions. Remember that some products are supposed to be used once a day and others require more frequent application.

You should feel the benefit as soon as you apply your moisturizer. If your skin is very dry it might take a bit longer, perhaps up to a couple of weeks, to notice the results.

It is vital to drink plenty of fluids, especially water, for your overall health. Wash your face once a day and steer clear of harsh cleansers. Do not bathe or shower in very hot water and keep the bathing time under fifteen minutes.

If you have dry skin or your skin is drying out more as you age, apply a good moisturizer every day. These simple measures can have a great effect on maximizing the health and appearance of your skin.

Next best thing to being there.

by J. B. Rogers Jr. from Arlington, TX on 2010-08-21
A few years ago, after reading about the restaurant in "The Barbeque Bible" by Steven Raichlen as being his choice for one of the top ten BBQ places on earth, I had a chance to dine at this mecca due to travel near Memphis for my daughter's soccer tournament. We spent Friday and Saturday in Germantown enjoying the soccer event but I was also looking forward to Sunday when I would acheive a quest of my own. We arrived in the area near noon that Sunday as we had a long drive ahead back to Dallas/Fort Worth. After touring the Gibson guitar plant, we went down the small alley toward the place when a smiling man called to us from the shadows, "You must be here for the Rendezvous!". I said "Yes, Yes Yes!", my face gleaming. Then he said "Sorry, it is closed on Sunday". Disspirited, we walked over to Beale street and entered a shop that coincedently sold the restaurant rub. I bought a couple shakers thinking at least I'll have a taste something like their ribs at home. We walked up the steet and had a very good meal and entertainment at B.B. King's and then made our way to Texas. A couple of weeks later, I was able to try the rub on a rack of ribs. Simply GREAT (and I do mean simply). Just follow the intructions on the shaker which call for basting while grilling in a solution of 1/2 vinegar to 1/2 water. Add the rub near the very end of cooking. Just so delicious. I now buy four at a time and have given the same as gifts. Enjoy.

by L. Nicholas from Chciago, IL on 2010-06-20
This seasoning is the seasoning used at Rendezvous restaurant in Memphis. It's delicious on ribs and also in sauces. I've also used it to make vinegar and ketchup based barbecue sauces and gotten rave reviews.

not trying to rib you--this is good stuff

by imu ilu from the world of hope on 2006-07-20
For the last 15 years or so, I have been using this seasoning on barbecued ribs that I prepare, and it's really good--when I get down to two jars it's time to order more. I ordered it from the Rendezvous restaurant in Memphis--I'm glad to see this is now being sold on Amazon. See also my comments on the Rendezvous barbecue sauce--if you can only get one, get the seasoning.

Perfect Chicken Seasoning & Chicken Soup Seasoning

by Paul J. Ulyak from Twain Harte, CA on 2010-06-19
I've purchased this product before and use it as a ritual when roasting or BBQ'ing chicken. I tend to disagree that it way to salty. The chicken only needs a sprinkle of this seasoning, not coated to the hilt.I've had guests over for a BBQ chicken dinner and everyone wants to know what is this seasoning and where can they buy it. Also, it tastes great if you add about 1/2 teaspoon full to the water when making rice for say 2 servings. An absolute must for the chicken bbq fanatic who wants a great tasting chicken.

Way too Salty!

by Mike from Georgia on 2010-05-17
I see this product got a lot of excellent reviews but I disagree 100% with the other reviewers. My wife and I are food critics, so we know when something is good or not. My wife and I immediately thought this seasoning was way too salty. It was so salty that it almost was not edible. It also tasted like Lawry used seasoning salt in the "Perfect Blend". This made it way too salt. If Lawry reduces the amount of salt by 60%, then I think this product can live up to its name. I found that McCormick Montreal Chicken Seasoning is the "Perfect Blend" for chicken. I am sorry I am venting a little bit, but Now I have to throw a 24.5 oz bottle of Lawry's seasoning in the trash.

This stuff rocks for chicken - is only available in large size

by Easy Rider from Los Angeles, California United States on 2010-05-03
This blend is so good on chicken that after it stopped showing up at my grocery, I actually called Lawry's. They told me that it was indeed discountinued but only in the consumer size. They still sell the 24-oz. to restaurants and in the warehouse stores. So if you get the big container, it's still fresh. Whew what a relief. All the better that it's gone from the grocery since no one will know where my 'secret' rub comes from.

It's (almost ) All Good!

by Charles J. Yeager from Norristown, PA United States on 2010-04-22
When I go to make something new, I look in this book first. Chances are it will have something I want to make. But now, I feel like I can create so many awesome sauces on my own. So, I thank Paul for getting me started, and making me realize that "it ain't rocket science". Since reading this book I make all kinds of sauces and condiments, not just BBQ sauce. Thanks, Paul!

THE best BBQ book out there

by C. PATRICK from Atlanta, GA on 2010-03-26
I started in to the wonderful world that is BBQ in 1995. 15 years later I still have this book and reference it when I'm looking for a new idea. Most BBQ books talk about technique, but frankly dont get right to the point and wont share recipes well. This one hits it. As BBQ is regional and personal taste, you wont like every recipe in the book. Paul gives you a wide variety and more than you'll need. For the beginner, I HIGHLY recommend this book. For the accomplished BBQ PitMaster, this book still offers ideas to help with your competition rub or sauce. This is the only BBQ book that I haven't thrown away.

Too bad the container is poorly designed!

by Jennifer Thompson from on 2010-08-05
About two years ago, I discovered this product and fell in love quickly only to be disappointed. As a frequent dry shampoo user, I have to say this one has the freshest shampoo-like scent and it really works without leaving a residue. The problem, which I am unable to overcome, is the issue with the sprayer getting clogged. Luckily, I bought my product from a local cosmetics shop and they allowed me to RETURN FOUR BOTTLES in a row. I tried hot water, I tried cleaning the nozzle. I never tried sticking an earring in it like another reviewer suggested, but I had enough. Probably because of their embarassment, one of the cosmetic store employees told me they had heard Ojan was improving their bottle. So I waited diligently for about a year before purchasing another bottle only to find that, just like before, after about 2 uses, the nozzle clogs.DEAR OJAN - PLEASE IMPROVE YOUR PACKAGING DESIGN SO I CAN CONTINUE TO USE YOUR PRODUCT!!! It is a horrible design flaw that has to cost a ton of money in returns and in loss of potential return customers - LIKE ME!Now I use Oscar Blandi's power, which is a fabulous product, but sprays are just a little better. I have heard similar reports in Blandi's spray and have avoided it as a result. Fuhrer's didn't really do much for me and a drugstore brand named Salon Grafix (SG) works effectively but smells like old lady hairspray.

Made my hair look more oily

by Jennifer from Baltimore, MD on 2010-06-16
I have tried many different dry shampoos and I think this was the worst of them all. I used it before a holiday party because I was running late and it made my hair look so shiny and wet that it looked MORE greasy than it actually was. And the smell, which was pleasant enough, is so incredibly strong that it is overpowering. I returned this after one use.

Clogging!

by Prettyfuzzy from Boston on 2010-04-26
Wow, I logged on to write about how the spray nozzle got clogged up and I see that I should have read the reviews before I bought this. Yes, the nozzle clogs and no matter how much I run it under warm water it won't un-clog. Bummer!

it clogs

by Corinne Mchugh from Los Angeles, CA United States on 2010-04-25
I used it once and it was amazing, as if I'd taken a shower and styled my hair in less than a minute! But not even a week later, I tried to use it for the second time and it is clogged, nothing will come out. No matter how many times I stick a safety pin through its horizontal hole or when I take off the orange top to reveal the spout and stick a pin in the vertical spout. For a second it seemed promising, but now I consider this product AN ABSOULUTE WASTE of money. I have also tried the OSIS dust dry shampoo and it is not great. It gives my hair body, but it still looks greasy.

unimpressed, will not return but will not buy again

by C. Wall from ny on 2010-03-18
I have thick curly hair. It can take up to an hour and a 1/2 to straighten my hair so naturally preserving the straightness for a day would be amazing. However like most things this product was just too good to be true. My first complaint is that it stinks. It made my hair smell like I burned in-scents or hung out a a hooka bar all night. Its a very ashy smell, in my hair it smelled like baby powder the next morning (when I was ready to wash it). Second complaint is that is just doesnt work. I was using it to get the slightly oily look out of my hair. It made it worse. My hair looked extra greasy and flat. I got absolutely no volume from using this. Even after throughly brushing and slightly back combing the root. My third complaint is the directions on the bottle are not very clear of how much product is needed for it to work. I havent used it long enough to know if my bottle would clog and I doubt that I will ever use it again. For something that is supposed to make you feel clean and refreshed after using this product I just felt dirty.
