Cooking Indian food at home - Where to Start?

Then I discovered "real" Indian food, and decided that since I could not afford afford to eat much, I had to learn to cook things myself.

My first stop then was a local bookstore, where the choice of books Indian cooking was somewhat limited. However, I struck lucky enough to discover a book called "Kitchen of India Madhur Jaffrey - what a find. Written in simple language but with lovely descriptive text and recommendations on what to serve with what was just what I was looking for.

There was an obstacle, without But it was the endless list of spices, seasonings and flavorings not know where to start - I had heard enough of them, after seeing one little television in Indian cooking, but "help", I thought, buying that many at once will cost a fortune. " If you are thinking the same thing, do not worry. Check in your pantry. You probably already have some of the items you need. For example, look for black peppercorns, bay leaf, chili powder (if you're a fan of chili with meat), ground ginger, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon if apple pies or tarts. Maybe you find the mustard seeds, if you make your own preserves and sesame seeds, if you make rolls or cook Chinese food. That only leaves some basic ingredients that appear in many recipes India - cumin, coriander, turmeric and cardamom. Often, you need ground cumin and coriander, but if you buy the whole spices, you can grind where necessary (and keep longer that way).

The other thing I did was choose a simple recipe to begin with, and I just bought the spices I needed for this. The next time you want to cook an Indian meal, I chose another recipe with similar ingredients so I had just bought a couple of things. Soon I built pantry all the things I needed and have not had a drastic effect on my wallet.

Then there was no stopping me - I even know some of recipes of heart right now and you can do the same if desired.

You do not need special equipment to Indian cuisine, although it would not be without my electric coffee grinder (for grinding spices) and it's nice (but not necessary) to make traditional dishes to serve food in. Other than that, it takes a little patience and it's fun to cook with a friend so you can share the cutting and milling or have someone read the recipe to you step by step, so not bad in the middle.

The flavors are great, a curry night is very sociable, so go ahead, give it a try.
