Colombian Market Beginning with Spanish colonization, how a dream of a great civilization became a dream deferred

Europeans 'called discovery of the so-called New World goes down in history as one of the most important and thrilling moments in human history, reaching the height of the appearance of agriculture, domestication of animals, and the discovery of fire use. Although the Vikings reached Newfoundland in about 1000, apparently decided Greenland that would make for a much better and scrammed colony, leaving the Spanish with all the glory of nearly five centuries later. The subsequent exchange of plants, animals, people, and disease has been named the "Columbian Exchange" after the charismatic Christopher Columbus, which hit the Bahamas thinking he had reached India.

During the following centuries, various groups of European explorers brought crops such as corn, potatoes, cassava, tomatoes, peppers, cocoa, peanuts, strawberries, and snuff to the Old World of the Americas - that the pope is no more Irish than the tomato is Italian, the Spanish pepper, or cigarette is French. In particular, carbohydrate-rich corn and potatoes helped ease food shortages murderer is all-too common in Europe, De Ireland's population only increased by 800 percent in 200 years - only to be devastated by the potato blight in the mid-1840s. So much for putting all potatoes in a basket.

Of course, not be called the Colombian Stock Exchange if the process had gone both ways. Photo of the Plains, and then subtract the horses. Image of a Central American banana republic, then subtract the bananas. Image of a donkey carrying a load of Colombian coffee beans, and then subtract both the donkey and coffee beans. Photo of a spread of Mexican food, then subtract the rice, cheese, lettuce, black olives, onions, chicken, pork and beef. Or the image a handful of distant, dry, completely impoverished Indian reservations, then subtract smallpox, influenza, typhoid, cholera, tuberculosis, measles, scarlet fever, yellow fever and malaria. These are just some of the things that Europeans brought with them during the early interaction with the New World.

The new world was a pretty healthy place before the Exchange "> Columbian Exchange, which is why Old World diseases had an easy life, decimating the indigenous populations. Think Jim and Dwight talking about health insurance in the office. Dwight: "No need. Has never been sick. Perfect system immune. "Jim:" Well, well, if you've never been sick, then we have no antibodies. "Having spent centuries continued suffering outbreaks of some thoroughly unpleasant diseases, Old Worlders had built very wide of the antibodies at the time they reached the Americas. In fact, many of the animals they brought to the New World - the aforementioned chickens, pigs and cows, for example - were the main reason that Europeans were so sick all the time. It turns out that sleep in the same room house that could harm their livestock to his poor health, especially at a time in the bathroom once a week gave him a real dandy.

Before title = "Spanish Colonization"> Spanish colonization and the Colombian Stock Exchange, the indigenous population of the Americas is estimated that between 40 and 100 million euros, which means that in all likelihood, the Native Americans were far more numerous in Europe 60 million citizens. In fact, in 1492, the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan was larger, cleaner and more beautiful than any city in Europe, while the Inca empire boasted the largest in the land. The "Great Dying" of indigenous peoples that followed may have killed as many as 1 in 5 people worldwide. Westerners love to go on and on Black death on the fourteenth century, but the plague - or even the sum of many plagues of Europe - can not hold a candle to what happened in the New World.

When settlers Europeans arrived in what is now the U.S., they were absolutely delighted with the beautiful, pristine, and the park-like landscape, and given that the "Indians" were dying mass around them, they thought that God was sending a signal of their right to land. Little did they know that they had encountered in the work of thousands of years of maintenance of native peoples, many of whom had been decimated by the rapid spread of European diseases before the settlers had arrived there.

The vast majority of indigenous peoples who have suffered during the Columbian exchange no longer exist to tell the tale. However, some of his survivors include unexpected black populations of the Americas, the introduction of the cassava plant in West Africa resulted in an increase in population that helps fuel the slavery Colombian cultivation around the conversion of cash crops like cotton, sugarcane, coffee and snuff. While Americans have been taught to live by words as "Manifest Destiny" and "American Dream" we must not forget the millions and millions of them, to quote a poem by Langston Hughes, United States America was a dream Deferred

Description

It's the book that started it all, the well-loved edition that first bought Betty Crocker cookbooks into American homes and hearts. Published in 1950, this ground-breaking title made cooking easy, it made cooking appealing, and best of all, it made cooking fun. Packed full of practical tips, useful hints, and lavish color photography, this was the book that shaped cooking for generations, the book that people remember. Every recipe you -- or your mother -- ever wanted is here, from pigs in blankets, to Emergency Steak to Chicken Tomato Aspic. Enjoy the clever ideas throughout -- twelve months of birthday cake ideas, showing how to decorate a cake to match each month's gem stone, pointers to make setting up a kitchen easy, or hints to make housework more pleasant. Feel a part of history when making Home Front Macaroni, developed during WW II rationing to stretch meat. Get into the spirit of fun with a Betty Crocker "Cookie Shine" or cookie baking party. People who grew up with this book will want it for the memories; those who are new to the book will want it for its charm and its intelligent approach to cooking. It's a perfect keepsake and a great gift.

First published in 1950, Betty Crocker's Picture Cook Book is now reprinted in all its old-fashioned glory. Betty immerses you in a time when women were homemakers, cakes had at least two layers, and salad was iceberg lettuce. You may hesitate to recreate what your mother or grandmother probably cooked--if so, consider that back then we ate simply, in the days before the word foodie was invented. Many of the recipes suit today's harried lifestyle, as you see in Six Layer Dinner, combining eight cups of vegetables with a pound of ground meat, and Dainty Tea Brownies topped with colorful chopped pistachios. Hundreds of black-and-white photos, animated drawings, and quaint color spreads of prepared dishes aid you in using the recipes. Beginners learn how to measure ingredients, choose the best economical cuts of meat, and cut up round and sheet cakes for serving. There is even a section on how to set the table. This loose-leaf book contains enough recipes to fill a 12-page, double-column index. Best of all, perhaps, is the "Shortcut" section, where useful tips include cleaning a grater of cheese residue by rubbing it with a piece of stale bread. These are interspersed with 15 ways to recuperate from overwork. One suggestion is to lie down on the kitchen floor on your back and relax for three to five minutes. Still a good idea, though few people have a kitchen large enough to try this. --Dana Jacobi

Description

Limited edition Japanese pressing of the 1991 album comes packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. Featuring some of the band's best known moments ('Under The Bridge', 'Give It Away', 'Breaking The Girl' and 'Suck My Kiss', this was the band's breakthrough album that turned them into worldwide arena superstars. WP. 2006.

With valuable assistance from producer Rick Rubin, the Peppers find just the right blend of punk, funk, and hip-hop. Even with a running time of 74 minutes, this 1991 breakthrough has continuity and cohesion both within and across the 17 cuts. Riding Flea's surging bass, Anthony Kiedis delivers his explicit lyrics with a rapper's flair, extolling the virtues (and outlining the dangers) of sex and drugs. Plaintive ballads such as "Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied," and the hit "Under the Bridge" give the album depth and provide contrast to the raw energy of "Mellowship Slinky in B Major," "Funky Monks," and "Give It Away." Rubin masterfully fuses John Frusciante's raunchy guitar with the irresistible grooves. --Marc Greilsamer
